Listeriosis Outbreak Linked to Deli Meats
CDC: Multiple Cases Across Multiple States
The CDC has reported an outbreak of listeria involving 26 people across 11 states. The outbreak has been traced back to pre-packaged deli meats, and as of June 13, 2023, the outbreak has been declared over.
Symptoms and Treatment
Listeriosis is a serious infection caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, listeriosis can lead to meningitis, bloodstream infections, and other serious complications.
Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics, and most people make a full recovery. However, it can be fatal for people with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly, pregnant women, and people with chronic diseases.
Preventing Listeriosis
To prevent listeriosis, it is important to practice good food safety. This includes:
- Washing your hands frequently with soap and water
- Washing fruits and vegetables before eating them
- Cooking meat thoroughly to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit
- Avoiding unpasteurized milk and cheese
- Discarding any deli meats that have been recalled
If you believe you have eaten contaminated deli meats and are experiencing symptoms of listeriosis, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.
