Southern California has been grappling with a significant increase in seismic activity in recent days, with 48 earthquakes of magnitude 15 or greater recorded in the past 24 hours. This surge follows a wider pattern of elevated activity in the region, with 555 earthquakes occurring in the past week and 1007 in the past 30 days.
Among the most notable events was a 7.1 earthquake that struck Southern California on Friday night, causing multiple fires and shaking the region. The epicenter of the quake was located 11 miles northeast of the city of Ridgecrest, and aftershocks continue to rattle the area.
